Mozart’s Mitridate Makes Its Teatro di San Carlo Debut
Mozart's Mitridate, re di Ponto has arrived at Naples' historic Teatro di San Carlo for the first time, with performances running from 24 September to 1 October 2026.
Mozart composed the opera when he was just 14 years old, yet more than 250 years later the work continues to inspire new interpretations. The San Carlo production, directed by Claus Guth and conducted by Riccardo Frizza, places the story within the setting of an affluent 1960s household.
The production highlights the remarkably mature dramatic instincts already evident in the teenage Mozart's music, bringing its themes of power, jealousy, rivalry and family conflict into a contemporary theatrical context.
The Naples debut offers another striking example of how Mozart's earliest works continue to find new life on the world's leading opera stages.
