Timeless Mozart: "Mozart Evenings in Chieti" Unveils a Four-Night Symphony of Excellence
The historic city of Chieti came alive in July 2022 with "Mozart Evenings," a magnificent celebration of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's enduring genius. Over four unforgettable nights, the Kyiv Virtuosi Orchestra, led by renowned conductors and joined by world-class soloists, transported audiences into the heart of classical music’s golden age. Each evening offered a curated program that showcased Mozart's extraordinary range and brilliance.
Opening Night – A Dramatic Prelude (26 July)
The festival began with Maestro Lavard Skou Larsen conducting the Kyiv Virtuosi Orchestra through two contrasting masterpieces. The iconic Eine kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525, opened the series with its elegant charm and impeccable classical balance. In contrast, the evening took a dramatic turn with the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, featuring the exceptional Hans Suh as the soloist. This emotionally charged work, filled with dynamic contrasts and theatrical intensity, left the audience enthralled.
The Second Night – Virtuosity in A Major (27 July)
The second evening brought two of Mozart's luminous concertos. Violinist Nikolai Managazze captured the youthful brilliance of the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219, often referred to as the "Turkish Concerto" for its exotic intervals and spirited phrasing. Pianist Saskia Giorgini then delivered a stirring rendition of the Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, K. 488. Her performance illuminated the poetic melancholy of the Adagio and the dazzling brilliance of the final Allegro assai.
Third Night – Instruments in Conversation (29 July)
The penultimate evening showcased the interplay between clarinet and piano. Franck Russo enchanted with his lyrical interpretation of the Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, a late Mozart masterpiece known for its ethereal beauty. Pianist Sona Barseghyan followed with the refined virtuosity of the Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, K. 414. The heartfelt Andante, a tribute to Johann Christian Bach, stood out as a highlight of the performance.
A Grand Finale – Strings and Elegance (30 July)
The festival concluded with a flourish as Belgian violinist Maya Levy performed the Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216, noted for its inventive interplay between the soloist and orchestra. The evening also featured two Divertimenti for strings, K. 137 and K. 138, led by Maestro Dimitry Yablonsky. These elegant works, blending dance and virtuoso passages, evoked the charm and clarity of 18th-century serenades.
